South Lakeland Green building lands top award
The building was completed in November last year and has a number of special features aimed at improving energy efficiency, including ground source heat pumps that extract heat from several boreholes 100 metres below the ground surface.

There are also photovoltaic cells at the back of the car park that generate some of the building's power requirements, including the power needed for the heat pumps.

The centre also boasts solar panels for water heating and so-called windcatchers to provide an air conditioning system. This system brings fresh air into the building and expels stale warm air using the natural effects of the wind.
